Wallace and Wray (20020 categorise the literature you are likely to encounter:
- theoretical literature. Remember: a theory is just a theory. Look critically at the evidence on which it is based and the claims is makes and make your own assessment of the quality of the theory provided.
- research literature: reports of systematic investigations undertaken in response to a specific research question. The research question will often arise from theory in an attempt to prove or disprove it. Reviews of research by other authors are useful as they allow you to see a study in the context of others.

- policy literature
